Exercise, Pregnancy And Maintaining A Fit Lifestyle While Becoming Parents
By Todd Fitchett - July 23, 2008

There comes a point in most people's lives when they are blessed with the realm of pregnancy and all of the joys, sacrifices, eagerness, anxieties, first time experiences and sacred moments that go along with it - all for that very special moment geared towards the entry of one's very own child into this crazy, yet amazing world. This is exactly what my wife and I have experienced (and still are) to this day, as we are currently six months along with our first child.

Me being an avid amateur bodybuilder and her a devoted lifter and fitness enthusiast, we have always strived to maintain balance in our lives and never let one aspect of our busy daily life over-consume another. Sometimes that is easier said than done, but we make it a point to achieve as much balance in our daily lives as possible. So how do we do it? By combining what we know needs to get done along with what what we love to do..day in and day out!

Whether my wife and I are at work, working out at the gym after work, or making dinner together after the gym, there is always something that we're involved with. To say that we have a fast-paced lifestyle is an understatement. I don't know how we actually manage to go grocery shopping, run miscellaneous errands, visit family and friends, and then have time to relax throughout each week..all while getting things prepared for the arrival of our first baby, but we somehow do it all. It is amazing what can be accomplished when you're driven and, or course, somewhat organized!

My beautiful wife Tara at 22 weeks along!

If there is one activity that we both enjoy doing most together, it would be heading to the gym 4-5 nights per week to do our workouts. Lifting weights and keeping fit, while maintaining a healthy diet is a lifestyle we both share a passion for. It's not only something we love to do, but we also look at it as an investment to our health, our quality of life, as well as the quality of life for our kids to come. Working out and eating clean is the one thing (along with family and friends) that we view as a constant in our lives. My wife and I met at the gym, had long-standing passion for working out before we met, and continue to share and reap the benefits of exercise and healthy living to this day, so I don't ever see that changing.

Since my wife becoming happily pregnant, we have had to learn how to juggle pregnancy (and all of the many changes and adaptations that come with it) into our daily life's balancing act. As far as working out goes, she still makes it to the gym 4-5 days per week (with me) and sports her baby-belly by wearing her Lululemon clothing (half-tops) while enjoying her lower-intensity workouts..always making sure to listen to her body as she goes. When I see her at the gym working out still (at 6 months pregnant), I smile and think to myself, "this is the coolest thing ever..she is definitely hardcore!". She has had many people come up to her and say she looks amazing and it's so cool to see her focused and having fun with her workouts. For me, seeing her working out while pregnant and still being able to share such a major passion together by prioritizing things and making time for the things we have always loved to partake in, just further assures me how important leading a healthy lifestyle is, and how we'll implement certain elements into our parenthood era soon to come.

It just goes to show you that you do not need to give up something you love to do, just because you're having a baby and suddenly hit with more responsibility. It's all about balance and not allowing any one thing to consume too much of your daily life. I guess the old saying of "too much of anything is never a good thing" is true after all!
